Chocolate Mint Soap
10 oz Shortening
4 oz Coconut oil
2 oz Olive oil
2 oz Lye
1 c Distilled water
3 tb Cocoa powder
2 Droppers peppermint
Essential oil
Hold back one oz. olive oil to mix with the cocoa powder. Melt the rest of the oils together. Mix the lye and water and allow to cool. With the lye mixture at 95 degrees and the fats at 115 degrees, pour the lye into the oil and stir until it traces. Pour into molds. Unmold after 48 hours, and cut if needed. Allow to age 3 weeks.
Almond Rose Soap
2 tbsp. dried red rose petals
8 oz. pure soap flakes
2/3 cup boiling water
1/2 cup rosewater
2 tbsp. ground almonds
9 drops geranium essential oil
Pound the petals with a mortar and pestle. In a bowl, mix the soap, petals, and water and stir until smooth (if the soap starts to solidify, place the bowl over near-boiling water). Stir in the rosewater and ground almonds; leave to cool. Mix in the essential oil. Shape into 6 balls and flatten them slightly; allow the soap to harden between sheets of wax paper. Keep unused soap in a cool, dark place until needed.
Herbal Steam Facial
I sometimes treat my self to an Herbal facial. here's how you can try this "spa-like" treatment in your own home:
Bring 4 cups of water to a simmer and add 4 tablespoons of an herb like lavender to a teapot. Pour boiling water over herbs in teapot, cover teapot. Sit at table and cover head with towel, slowly pour steaming herb/water mix into deep bowl, do 1/3 of the water at a time. Allow the steam to build up around your face, but be careful of the hot water. The steam will do wonders for your face, skin is moister and younger looking, feeling. Do not steam longer than 20 mins. Use an astringent immediately after steam while pores are open, for best results.
Rosewater
Gather about 2 lbs. of scented petals before they fall. The fresher the better. The actual ratio of Roses to water depends on the color and fragrance desired. You can start with about 2 cups of rose petals firmly packed to a litre of water. Place in an enamel saucepan or preferably earthenware pan. Cover with cold soft water (preferably rainwater). Bring almost to a boil. Let cool. Strain. Be careful not to scorch. Red Roses cause the water to turn a pale pink. Other color roses turn the water a brownish yellow muddy color. The water will remain scented for a good two days. Refrigerated it lasts longer
Lip Balm
3 teaspoons beeswax
3 teaspoons olive oil
3 teaspoons sweet almond oil
1 teaspoon honey
5 drops of essential oil (lemon, peppermint, orange, lime)
Melt oils and beeswax together. Take off stove and add in honey then essential oil & Coloring. Stir well and pour into small container.
Dry Skin Moisturizer
4 ounces shea butter
2 ounces organic olive oil
2 teaspoons organic vitamin E oil, 5000 IU
1 teaspoon active royal jelly (refrigerated section of health food stores)
6 drops organic lavender essential oil
Mix all ingredients on high until smooth and creamy. Store refrigerated in an airtight container. It is necessary to make small amounts of this at a time and keep refrigerated because of the active royal jelly. This is an awesome ingredient for its healing properties and well worth the effort.
